What Are the Effects & Symptoms?
Spinal cord injuries can result in numbness, a lack of reflex function below the point of injury (which will in turn affect bowel and bladder control), and paralysis. Sensitivity to pain or stimuli, muscle spasms, and sexual dysfunction may also arise.
Further symptoms include bladder and lung infections, in addition to other secondary medical problems. Damages will often result in the loss of mobility or feeling. It should be noted that the spinal cord does not have to be severed for the loss of functioning to occur.
Individuals with spinal cord injuries may also experience dysfunction of the bowel and bladder. Moreover, very high spinal injuries (C-1, C-2) can result in the loss of involuntary functions, such as the ability to breathe (making ventilators or diaphragmatic pacemakers necessary).
Further effects of spinal cord injury include low blood pressure, no control over body temperature, an inability to regulate blood pressure, chronic pain and the inability to sweat below the point of injury.
Types of Spinal Cord Injuries
Compression is the most common type of spinal cord injury (what results when pressure is inflicted upon the spinal cord). Contusion, or spinal cord bruising, is also a tragically common occurrence.
Other forms of spinal cord injuries include central cord syndrome (involving specific damage that occurs to the corticospinal tracts located in the cervical region of the spine) and lacerations (the severing of nerve fibers). These injuries often occur from car accidents or and may also result from injuries sustained through substandard medical treatment (medical malpractice) or spinal surgery.
